Being diagnosed with dementia or other similar diseases is not an easy pill to swallow. A lot of people that receive this news from their doctor have feelings of hopelessness and feel highly overwhelmed. Laura Gitlin and Nancy Hodgson speak about how to live with dementia and how to take care of yourself in their new book “Better Living With Dementia.”

“There is no cure for Alzheimer’s but there are many things that can be done to make life better for people with dementia and their caregivers,” says Laura Gitlin. One important key is to make sure that you are working with financial advisors, caregiver support services, or even adult daycare centers. Having someone that is knowledgeable and knows what type of information you will need going forward is important. In their book Gitlin and Hodgson state that most people are not given the right information and resources that they need to plan their future.

The majority of people who have Dementia or Alzheimers live at home. In their book, they discuss several strategies to help improve the quality of life. The strategies that they refer to are attending to the home, creating a routine, and knowing what to expect. “It’s important to let people with dementia know that they belong and surround them with a feeling of warmth and affection,” Hodgson said. Making sure that people are surrounded by their family and loved ones is so important.
